Hyderabad: Schools affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE and IB and other media schools in the State have to compulsorily impart Telugu for Class 4 in the primary level and Class 9 in the secondary level in the academic year 2021-22.

The State government has made teaching and learning of Telugu compulsory in all schools including those affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE, IB and other media schools through Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018. It was decided to implement this in a phased manner with one class each at a primary and secondary level every year.

Already, Telugu is being taught for classes 1, 2 and 3 at the primary level and for classes 6, 7 and 8 at the secondary level in other media, CBSE, ICSE and IB schools.

“Telugu is to be imparted compulsorily for class 4 in the primary level and for class 9 in the secondary level in the academic year 2021-22,” reads the proceedings recently issued by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

Schools affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE and IB teach three languages till class 8 as part of the three-language formula.

“Only two languages are taught from class 9. As per Compulsory Telugu Act, these Boards have to impart Telugu along with English from the academic year 2021-22. Action will be taken on the non-compliant schools as per the GO,” the SCERT said.

To facilitate teaching and learning of Telugu in this manner, the SCERT has designed Telugu textbooks for classes 4 and 9 for the academic year 2021-22 and they will be made available on the SCERT website after they are published. Earlier, it designed Telugu textbooks for classes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8.
