Temple demolition sparks protest in Sangareddy’s Kandi mandal

A temple demolition in Lakshmi Nagar Colony of Kandi mandal, Sangareddy, led to strong protests from locals on Wednesday. The transgender community, which had purchased the land from the family of the temple caretaker, razed the structure to build a house.

Sangareddy: The demolition of a temple attracted the ire of the locals at Lakshmi Nagar Colony in Kandi mandal headquarters on Wednesday. According to locals, one person Narsimhulu used to take care of the Pochamma temple located in Kandi until a few months ago. However, he passed away due to age-related illness.

Since the transgender persons, who were residing in the area, had a close relationship with them, they used to support Narsimhulu’s family financially. After his demise, the transgender community bought the 100-yard plot where the temple was located, by paying Rs 5 lakh from his family members. The community demolished the temple to build a house for them on Wednesday which attracted strong opposition from locals.

The locals picked up a serious argument with the community. When the situation was taking a violent turn, the police intervened and took them into custody. The locals relented only after the transgender persons gave an assurance that they would build a new temple at the same site. A couple of ancient idols, including a Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy idol, were also found on the premises of the temple.
