Narayanpet: Tension prevailed for a while at Damargidda here on Saturday after farmers demanded compensation for their lands acquired under the Narayanpet-Kodangal Lift Irrigation Scheme.
Farmers intercepted officials who had arrived to perform the ground-breaking ceremony for the Kanukurthi Reservoir works as part of the scheme. The farmers confronted the officials, questioning the delay in compensating those displaced in Kanukurthi, according to reports.
They argued that the government had already paid partial compensation to landowners in Malreddypalli and Munkanpalli villages. The farmers demanded that the officials pay compensation before the commencement of any works. However, after the officials persuaded the farmers with assurances, the ground-breaking ceremony was permitted, reports said.
Apart from Sarpanch N Narayana, other officials and leaders of farmers’ associations participated in the event.
