Adilabad: Tension prevailed for a while when activists of both Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to blows after exchanging heated arguments over withdrawal of nomination by Independent candidate P Pushparani here on Friday. The activists of the TRS and BJP, who gathered on the premises of the Collectorate clashed over the withdrawal of Pushparani’s candidature. They were dispersed by policemen. Leaders of the two parties and tribal rights organization Tudumdebba were detained for creating ruckus at the office of the returning officer of elections to Adilabad Local Authorities Constituency (LAC).
Trouble broke out when the news of Pushparani withdrawing went viral on social media platforms. While activists of the TRS were jubilant, the members of BJP staged a sit-in in front of the Collectorate in support of the tribal leader. The two groups picked an argument with each other, triggering the tension. Pushparani, an activist of Tudumdebba, however, declared that she would be in the fray. Earlier, 22 Independent candidates withdrew their nominations by the last date for quitting from the fray. Forest Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy, Government Whip Balka Suman and 10 legislators of the erstwhile Adilabad district camped in Adilabad town to avoid polls to the Adilabad LAC seat and to ensure TRS candidate Dande Vittal was elected unanimously. However, their efforts bore no fruits.
Consequently, the two nominees Dande Vittal and Pushparani will contest in the polls to Adilabad LAC slated for December 10. The counting of the votes will be held on December 14. A tribal woman is testing her luck in the polls to the seat for the first time.
