Hyderabad: In a major step towards supporting eye donation, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) on Monday entered into an agreement with Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, to transport donated corneas free of cost in its buses under the initiative “Network to Sight.”
As part of this arrangement, corneas collected from government hospitals across the State will be preserved in ice boxes and handed over to TGSRTC logistics centres. RTC drivers will then bring them safely to Hyderabad, where hospital staff will collect and store them in the eye bank.
TGSRTC Managing Director V C Sajjanar, who signed the MoU with Dr Modini, Superintendent of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, said the corporation was proud to be part of such a noble initiative.
He noted that while over three lakh people await corneal transplants in India annually, only about 18,000 transplants were performed. He further urged citizens to pledge their eyes for donation after death.
Dr Modini thanked TGSRTC for its support, saying the initiative would ensure the timely and safe delivery of corneas for patients in need.
On this occasion, Sajjanar himself took the eye donation pledge and handed over his signed pledge form to the hospital superintendent.
