Karimnagar: From Thailand to Telangana and from skirts to saree was not an easy transition for Kawinnat Warapron. Kawinnat, a citizen of Thailand employed in a firm in Sharjah in United Arab Emirates where Gasiganti Harish from Telangana also works.
The two fell in love with each other and decided to get married. Both convinced their parents and flew to India for the wedding. The marriage was performed at Mallial in Jagtial district on Thursday in the presence of relatives and friends. “Though we could have opted for the Indian consulate in Dubai to solemnise our marriage, we preferred home,” said Harish.
Speaking to Telangana Today after their marriage rituals, the couple said they waited for over a year following Covid-19 travel restrictions. After India, the second reception from the bride’s side will be held at Chiyapum in Thailand, they added.
“Though we started liking each other, despite communication problems to some extent, we both were of the opinion that our love will blossom into a marriage only with the parents nod”, the newly wedded couple said.
On being asked about her maiden visit to India, Kawinnat said: “I didn’t feel like an alien at all in this part of India, Indians are warm and hospitable.”Hailing Telangana and its people, the Thailand bride said that though she interacted with other Indians in UAE, visiting Telangana and meeting its people was something she will cherish.
She smiles as she meets the relatives of Harish as the new bride. “I have seen the rituals and traditions on YouTube and followed the same,” she said.
Asked about Indian costumes, Kawinnat said she had trouble wearing the saree initially but learned how to drape it around after a few attempts.
“It is the love and trust along with the support from my husband and his family that helped me adapt to Telangana culture,” she added.
Harish’s maternal uncle Gudise Laxman performed the Kalyadanam for Kawinnat as her father is no more.
The Foreign Marriage Act 1969 has provisions for marriages of Indian citizens abroad. However, owing to lengthy legal procedures of multiple countries, many NRIs opt for a wedding at home according to elegant local Hindu traditions and register here.
