Hyderabad: The under-15 sub-juniors proved to be a two-horse race with Shreya Krishna of Tamil Nadu and local girl Lahiri Kommaravelly battling it out neck-and-neck in all three races, finishing within a whisker of each other in the 16th Monsoon Regatta at Hussain Sagar Lake here on Monday, which saw 18-20 knot winds typical of the monsoon.
In the first two races, Lahiri led till the last two legs, only to be beaten to the finish by Shreya. In the last race, Shreya was tightly challenged throughout, but she led from start to finish, with Lahiri close behind, unable to cut the lead.
Shreya Krishna of Tamil Nadu has trained significantly abroad for more than 100 days and is India’s favourite at both the upcoming Asian and World events.
Lahiri is soon off to Malaysia for the Langkawi Youth International, and the tight pacing at the Monsoon Regatta will only help improve her quest for a second international medal after the Oman International last year.
Both girls are in top form, and it promises to be a hotly competitive regatta for gold and silver.
In the boys’ category, local lad Rizwan Mohammad tops the leaderboard, followed closely by Krishna of Tamil Nadu, making both boys’ and girls’ competitions a Tamil Nadu vs Telangana face-off, at least for Day 1 of the Sub-Juniors Optimist Championships.
In the under-19 juniors, Karthik Korrola and Hruday of the Navy youth team from NYSC GOA proved supreme in the 29er skiff class, winning two races by a margin and securing second in the third race.
Sharanya Yadav of NYSC Goa also cracked the code and won all three of his races, reigning supreme over the boys’ under-19 Laser fleet as expected.
Top seeds and Telangana sailors Thanuja Kameshwar and Shravan stole the show in the under-19 mixed doubles class, winning all three races of the day, followed by compatriots Deekshita Kommaravelly and Ganesh Peerkatla.
Most of the winners from Hyderabad have fitness coaches from Suchitra Academy and are from Udbhav School at Rasoolpura.
