The GTA 6 leaks fiasco: What to make of a chaotic week for Rockstar?

Hyderabad: Most advertising and public relations practitioners will tell you that there is no such thing as bad publicity. However, that popular visibility mantra seems to be no consolation for game maker Take-Two.

Over the last week, anonymous leaker(s) working under the pseudonym “Cyberleek” have relentlessly leaked screenshots and short video clips from the much-awaited GTA VI. The nine sets of leaks so far offer a wide array of information, ranging from maps to gameplay footage. It appears the leakers have a functional pre-release version of the game in their possession.

What’s the fuss about?

GTA VI is by far the largest game of the year and possibly the decade. Millions of gamers around the world await its release, set for November this year. Historically, Rockstar, the franchise’s creator, has kept details carefully under wraps. They were seemingly all set for an official exclusive reveal on Netflix on August 27. However, the leaks by Cyberleek appear to have dented that momentum. In doing so, they shattered any illusion of control Rockstar might have had over the game’s planned launch.

The “Extended Look” promised to Netflix as a six-hour timed exclusive seems more along the lines of a financial deal than a typical promotional strategy. With unintended leaks emerging prior to the official reveal, the hype around the event appears both diminished and distracted.

Why the Leaks?

Cyberleek claims that the leaks are part of a larger movement fighting for gamer justice. They wish to punish game makers who have stopped providing games on physical discs and those who encourage pre-orders for unfinished games. Their manifesto claims to fight against cosmetic downloadable content (DLC) and the loss of single-player content when game servers shut down. At a time when Sony has planned a gaming future with no physical media, Cyberleek seems to have seized worldwide gamer resentment to justify its non-stop leaks.

However, with each leak, the group has also dabbled in cryptocurrency. They have encouraged viewers and followers to buy and pledge digital currency on voting systems, and even buy premium advertising space in leaks. The Cyberleek coin has consequently seen significant movement on crypto markets. With each new leak, it forces us to ask if gamer sentiments are simply being used as a guise to make quick money.

How has Rockstar retaliated?

Rockstar seems to have taken a leaf out of Nintendo’s playbook and retaliated litigiously by issuing takedown notices and going to court to request the unmasking of leaker identities on platforms like GitHub and Discord. Take-Two’s legal team has requested identifier information on the group’s handles, as well as other people suspected of allying with them, including a popular GTA content streamer.

While the move seems logical considering the stakes for Rockstar and Take-Two, it is also important to note that platforms are expected to protect their users’ identities. Consequently, this investigation is bound to unfurl significant challenges in balancing personal privacy against big business interests.

The Takeaways

The GTA VI hype train is unlikely to be affected. The court case will drag on for a while and will see a lot of digital and fundamental rights challenged. For now, the leaks are unlikely to be interrupted, as Cyberleek leaked content even on the day legal proceedings began.

Looking at their use of crypto, gamers’ rights seem to be just a means to whitewash what essentially looks like a ransomware moment.
