If you are on the lookout for quirky wall hangings and home décor accents, The Macrame Corridor is a great place to start with. An online store on Instagram started during the lockdown, it is the brainchild of former visual merchandiser Surbhi Ghiya who had always wanted to try her hand at macramé, (the art of creating different designs and techniques using knots), but never got around to it.
That is until the lockdown. Left with a lot of time during the pandemic last year, Surbhi, who had watched her mother effortlessly churn out household items using the macramé technique, decided to follow her and started small with keychain holders, before moving to larger items like wall hangings and chandeliers.
“I use different styles of knots depending on what I’m making. All the products are hand-crafted. But with the increase in demand, I’m looking at employing women who are struggling financially due to the pandemic. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad give out the most orders. Instagram and Amazon help in a big way as my website isn’t fully functioning yet,” adds Surbhi.
She sources the material which is mostly spun cotton from Gujarat. While it is common to use materials like linen, hemp, jute, leather and yarn with this technique, she prefers to stick to cotton.
And, it takes her eight hours to a week depending on what kind of design she is working on. “If it’s a wall hanging, it can take an entire week. Like one hanging I did for a client was meant to be a covering for a window, it was a pretty complicated design done in shades of grey and olive green. The knotting technique I used was also time-consuming. But if it’s a key chain, I can do that in two to three hours’ time at a stretch,” says Surbhi, who also does customisations. Prices range from Rs 150 to Rs 8,000.
