Hyderabad: The victorious Hyderabad team was returning from Delhi after having won the finals of the Ranji Trophy against the formidable Delhi team. The Secunderabad Railway station where we arrived was packed with cricket fans who came to celebrate this victory.

We were then escorted in a procession in open trucks to the Gymkhana grounds and cheered along the way by the locals on the entire journey between the station and the Gymkhana where in a felicitation function was arranged by the Hyderabad Cricket Association.

This was a golden year for Hyderabad cricket and the Ranji Trophy victory was followed up by the Irani Trophy victory that was traditionally played between the Ranji Trophy champions and the Rest of India.
The year 1987–88 should have marked the turnaround for Hyderabad cricket and there should have been a repeat of such victories from then until the current year 2022. However that has not happened.

At present, Hyderabad cricket is on a low ebb and for a variety of reasons it has been on a constant decline more so when you factor that other State associations have upgraded their standards and begun to compete with their senior teams in all formats of the game.

It is ironical that in the past two decades Hyderabad has been blessed that their International cricketers Shivalal Yadav, Arshad Ayub, MV Sridhar and Mohammed Azharuddin have been at the helm of the association affairs which should have enabled the focus to be on development of cricket standards to the level of optimal excellence.

However, the scenario has been only the opposite and the theory that cricketers should run cricket associations has proved, at least in this case, to be a total failure.

The scientific theories that advocate that in order to produce the best products we must follow the best available processes is defeated entirely and the so called groups and syndicates have managed to manipulate through power politics and money power to ensure that their vested interests get preference to the development of talent amongst cricket aspirants.

The problem is the members of the Hyderabad Cricket Association and the solution lies in bringing about a change of these people who work in groups and syndicates. As we have observed that having a cricketer at the helm of the Association has not been adequate it is logical that in order to neutralise the groups and syndicates we allow former First Class cricketers to be enrolled as members with a vote in electing the decision makers of the Association.

Hyderabad Cricket needs a makeover and it has to happen without further delay.
