Nirmal: Three unidentified men allegedly stole two tolas of gold ornaments from an elderly couple by enacting a deceptive skit at Pippiri village in Bhainsa mandal on Tuesday.
The victims, Rajavva and Govind of Ambakanti village, were intercepted by the trio while walking along a road. Claiming to be concerned officials, the conmen warned the couple about a supposed gang of robbers operating in the area and advised them to hand over their jewellery for “safekeeping.”
To win their trust, one of the miscreants posed as an official, another as a traveller, and the third as the official’s assistant. The ‘traveller’ handed over his own ornaments to the fake official in front of the couple, prompting them to follow suit. The man who played the official wrapped the jewellery in a piece of paper and handed it back.
The couple later discovered they had been duped when they opened the packet and found only clay inside. They alerted their relatives, who then informed the local police. Officers visited the spot and began an investigation.
