Hyderabad: Heart surgeons at Care Cardiac Centre of Durgabai Deshmukh Hospital (DDH), Vidyanagar, have implanted a third generation Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in a male patient who went into heart failure following a large stroke that he had suffered about three months ago, surgeons in a statement said.
The LVAD is a mechanical pump, which is implanted in patients with heart failure. The device enables to bottom left chamber of the heart i.e. the left ventricle to pump blood to aorta and rest of the body.
Over the years, the technology in implantable assist devices has evolved and it has reached a stage where they are able to permanently support the heart with 2-year survival results, comparable to heart transplantation. The third generation LVAD devices have markedly reduced the chances of mechanical failure of the pump and the issue of blood clotting is addressed through blood thinner drugs, called anticoagulants, doctors said.
The surgeons implanted the device on September 8 and the patient was discharged on September 24. The patient is stable and is able to walk and climb stairs on his own, the doctors added.
