Hyderabad: The girl power in India came to the fore in the ongoing Olympics when Mirabai Chanu clinched silver in the Tokyo Games. It is the third straight Olympic medal for the country by women.

In Rio Olympics, Indian girls saved the face of the country by winning two medals. Badminton star PV Sindhu won a silver while wrestler Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze. India sent a contingent of 117 athletes to Rio de Janeiro but it was these two girls who saved India from a major embarrassment.

Mirabai also helped India clinch a medal on the very first day of the Olympics for the first time. Never in the history, did India won a medal on the opening day. Her medal also helped India stay at the second place in the points table for a brief time, which is also a rarity.
