Hyderabad: As you enter the Pet Café in Banjara Hills, you might first meet the boarding dogs that came for a stay over and then some rescue dogs having fun on the next floor. Well, be careful with your masks and scarfs as these furry ones may get pretty naughty.
A paradise for pets, the café, started by Deven Baheti and wife Sonam, is a ‘human-friendly’ café where pets are more welcome than their caretakers.
“When we think of a pet-friendly café, it is usually all about well-bred dogs like Labradors and Saint Bernards. But I wanted to bring some attention to stray dogs at my café. I want people to know that these ‘galli ke kutte’ are also lovable,” shares Deven, adding that there have been about 176 adoptions since they opened the café.
Deven admits that he wasn’t always a pet lover. A rainy night and a hapless puppy’s wails changed him. “That rainy night, I heard a puppy cry. I was partly agitated as I couldn’t sleep. But the next morning I found the little one stuck in a water pipe, and things changed.”
Deven has named the puppy Lexi, which in Italian means ‘something you cannot live without’. Ten years on, Lexi is still with the couple at the Pet Cafe. Deven shares he has since rescued over 3,000 animals, from dogs and cats to horses and camels. Apart from his growing love for pets, Deven, an aeronautical engineer by profession, also wanted to address his cookery skills. And this idea gave birth to a café where ‘humans accompany pets’.
Apart from rescue dogs, the café also offers boarding and food delivery services. “We deliver dog food to several vegetarian caretaker households who find it difficult to make non-vegetarian food for pets,” he says.
The café’s menu for pets ranges from dog cakes, cupcakes and doughnuts to ice creams, which are all sugarless. One can also celebrate their pet’s birthday at the café with customisable options. Reservations have to be made in advance. Details are on their Instagram Page @thepetcafehyd.
