Warangal Rural: In a ghastly road accident, four women farm labourers died and eight others were injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided head-on with a rashly-driven SUV at Neerukulla crossroad on NH-163 in Athmakuru mandal in the district on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Madishetti Sambalakshmi (65), Palakurti Sarojana (55), Mohammad Mehboobi (50) and Atmakuru Bharathi (55) of Atmakur village. While two died on the spot, two more succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Police said 16 people including the driver of the autorickshaw, Aluvala Ravi, were heading towards Rangapuram village of Duggondi mandal to pick red chilli crop. When the autorickshaw reached a crossing identified as an accident-prone zone, a car coming from the opposite direction rammed the autorickshaw.

Eight people including Ravi are undergoing treatment at the MGM Hospital. Police said rash and negligent driving by the SUV (Toofan) driver Bhukya Suresh of Vidhwamadhapuram village of Station Ghanpur mandal, resulted in the accident. Athamakur police have registered a case and taken up an investigation.

Meanwhile, Panchayat Raj Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao enquired with the police about the accident and directed the officials to take steps to ensure proper treatment to the injured. Parkal MLA Challa Dharma Reddy visited the MGM Hospital and consoled the victims.
