Three arrested for murdering elderly woman for 4 grams of gold in Asifabad

Three persons were arrested in Asifabad for allegedly murdering 80-year-old Mekarthi Mallakka for her gold ornaments. Police recovered 4 grams of gold, Rs 1,500 in cash and a stone allegedly used in the crime, according to SP Nitika Pant.

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Three persons were arrested on Thursday on charges of murdering a single elderly woman for her gold ornaments at Burguguda village in Asifabad mandal on August 30. Police recovered 4 grams of gold ornaments, Rs 1,500 in cash and a stone used to kill the woman from the three.

Briefing media persons on the arrests, SP Nitika Pant said Mekarthi Dhanunjay, a daily wage labourer from Buruguguda, Namevath Praveen and Raparthi Mahesh, both from TR Nagar in Asifabad, were apprehended for their alleged role in the murder of Mekarthi Mallakka (80). Mallakka was Dhanunjay’s relative.

During interrogation, Dhanunjay reportedly confessed to murdering his relative by bludgeoning her to death with the stone with the assistance of the two others. They admitted to committing the offence to buy liquor and meet his personal expenses. Police said he took away the woman’s earrings and cash stored in an iron almirah after killing her.
