Three rare Kalyana Chalukya-Era kannada inscriptions discovered in Vikarabad

Acting on information from Sampath Kumar, a local teacher, and a preliminary investigation by noted archaeologist Sivanagireddy a few days ago, Haragopal visited the site on Sunday and deciphered the inscriptions.

Hyderabad: Three new Kannada inscriptions of of the Kalyana Chalukya era were noticed for the first time at Kankal village, Pudur mandal in Vikarabad.

Based on the information provided by Sampath kumar, a local teacher and primary invention conducted by noted archeologist Sivanagireddy a few days ago, Haragopal rushed to the spot on Sunday, deciphered the inscriptions.


The team revealed that there are two inscriptions on one slab and one inscription on another slab issued during the 4th,5th and 6th regal years of Someswara-III, Bhulokamalladeva , Emperor of the Kalyana Chalukya dynasty ruled from Kalyana dated to 25th December 1129 CE, 5th October 1130 CE and 8th January 1132 CE respectively.

According to him, the first inscription records construction of Bijjeswara temple and consecration of a Sivalinga and donation of 100 martars ( the then land measure) by Bijjarasa a local chief at Kankal village which falls in Kankalla-24 Kampana administrative division; the second inscription registers the gift of some lands and cash to Bijjeswara temple by Somideva Preggada , local Choudary and Karanam Bijjarasa ,and the third one records donations made by Somapermanadi, Choudary Gundarasa, local Gavundas viz., Bemminayaka, Nabhanayaka and Bilanayaka to the temple .

Haragopal adds that these unpublished inscriptions are deciphered afresh and deserve protection along with the innumerablejain and brahmanical sculptures left uncared in the village.
