Hyderabad: Panic prevailed in the villages of Ellantakunta mandal in Rajanna Sircilla district after a tiger attacked and killed four cattle on outskirts of the Thippapuram village on Monday night.
The cattle killing came to light early on Tuesday when Sudhakar, a farmer, went to his cattle shed and found four cattle killed. The farmer then checked the surroundings and noticed unusually big pugmarks in the fields. Sensing something was in danger, he alerted the villagers, who reached the spot and, after checking the footprints, surmised that a tiger moved in the area and had killed the cattle. On information, the local police and forest officials reached the spot.
The tiger had stayed put at the reserve forest in Chinnakondur mandal of Siddipet for last four days and travelled a distance of around 35 km through the night and reached Thippapuram village, where it attacked the cattle on Monday night.
The forest teams then fanned out in the village and tracked the pugmarks to the hill with thick bushes on one side of the village. The hills are spread over an area of 12 kilometres up to Sircilla.
Throughout the day, the forest teams fixed camera traps at the cattle killing spot and in surroundings. The veterinarians and the Pune-based team of wildlife experts visited the spot.
The villages were alerted against moving in the fields in the early hours of the day and to stay at home at night. The usual hustle and bustle in the village took a break on Tuesday, with villager elders staying at home while those who headed to the fields returned home early in the evening.
The people in the neighbouring villages were asked to be on alert in view of the movement of tiger. It is believed the tiger is taking short breaks en route to its journey back to Maharashtra, from where it had entered Telangana.
The tiger had stayed for a few days at Arepalli in Koheda Mandal for close to five days and again at reserve forest at Chinnakodur.
