TN officials suspended for Hindi lettering on highway signboard
Two Tamil Nadu Highways Department officials were suspended after Hindi words appeared on a newly installed signboard on the Sathankulam-Nazareth State Highway. The government said the lettering violated the state’s Tamil-English two-language policy and warned of strict action
Chennai: Two Tamil Nadu Highways Department officials were suspended for violating the state’s two-language policy of Tamil and English by allowing Hindi words to be used on a State Highway signboard, the state government said on Friday.
The Hindi words were subsequently removed from the signboard and departmental action was initiated against the two officials, the government said.
The newly installed signboard on the Sathankulam-Nazareth State Highway (SH-93) in Thoothukudi district carried the names of towns in Tamil and English as well as Hindi.
As soon as the government learnt about the Hindi lettering, it was removed from the signboard, an official release said.
“The two officials who were responsible for the inclusion of Hindi on the signboard by violating the two-language policy have been suspended and departmental action has been initiated,” the government said.
The state government also warned of strict action against officials who violate its two-language policy of using Tamil and English.
