Adilabad: Police seized large quantities of a prohibited tobacco product being transported from Hyderabad to Adilabad by a van at Bellari village in Gudihathnoor mandal on Friday early morning. As many as 100 bags containing Amber packets and the van were seized. The value of the product is assessed to be Rs 17.50 lakh.

Echoda Inspector Kampa Ravinder told pressmen that a driver diverted the van towards Bellari village upon noticing a vehicle check by local police at around 3 am. He and some unknown person abandoned the van and fled the spot when the cops chased the vehicle.

The bags consisting of the tobacco product packets were found in the van when police searched the vehicle. A case was registered and investigations were taken up. A special team was formed for nabbing the kingpin of the crime, the Inspector informed. He added that stringent action would be taken against those who smuggle the prohibited products.

In-charge Superintendent of Police M Rajesh Chandra and Utnoor DSP N Uday Reddy commended Echoda police for busting the tobacco product racket.
