Tokyo Olympics: A cake-walk for shuttler PV Sindhu
All eyes were on Sindhu, the Rio Olympics silver medallist, as she walked onto the court. She straightaway looked in great form as the 58th ranked Polikarpova caved in meekly.
Hyderabad: It was her first match and PV Sindhu meant business in her clinical demolition of Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova 21-7, 21-10 to start her Olympic campaign on a rousing note in the women’s singles group J match here on Sunday.
All eyes were on Sindhu, the Rio Olympics silver medallist, as she walked onto the court. She straightaway looked in great form as the 58th ranked Polikarpova caved in meekly. “Even though it was an easy first match I didn’t take it in an easy way. It wasn’t like I wasn’t prepared.
Every time, it is very important to be focused and be prepared for every single point in every single match,’’ said the sixth ranked player.
Though it was a lop-sided contest, the World champion said it was quite an easy match. “But I made sure that we had some rallies and I got used to the court.” Sindhu next faces Hong Kong’s world number 34 Cheung Ngan Yi in the group stage.
Former national coach Bhaskar Babu said this match was more of Sindhu getting adjusted to the conditions. “She virtually toyed with her opponent. Her movement on the court was good. She was sharp while executing her stroke. She looked fit. But she will be tested from the next round. There is a lot of confidence in her game. She is more focused and ready for the challenges,’’ he said.
