Hyderabad: World champion PV Sindhu outwitted Mia Blichfeldt 21-15, 21-13 in 40 minutes to storm into the women’s quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday.

Playing an aggressive game, Sindhu had the measure of the Dane. The Indian star was full of energy. She moved well and executed some brilliant strokes. The Dane, though, stretched Sindhu with a few well-directed shots towards the left side court of the Indian.

The Indian took a big 11-6 lead in the first game. But the Dane clawed back magnificently as she forced Sindhu to make unforced errors. Blicfeldt stunned the sixth seed with controlled aggression. Sindhu conceded a few points as the Dane took a 16-12.

Though rattled, Sindhu fought back with a cool and calculated game. She began to assert herself and got into a good rhythm. She was back in her elements as she dominated the game with brilliant cross court and drop shots before closing the game.

Growing in stature, Sindhu meant business. She reeled off points with controlled attacking strokes that caught the Dane on the wrong foot. Blichfeldt’s game began to crumble as Sindhu was in full flow. The Indian surged ahead 11-6 and then ran away to a 18-11 lead. Although the Dane managed to save match points, it was all over bar the shouting as Sindhu stamped her class with an impeccable game.

Sindhu will now clash with Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals.
