Los Angeles: Hollywood star Tom Hanks is in talks to star in the movie adaptation of Allen Levi’s popular novel “Theo of Golden”, a book that Warner Bros Pictures is negotiating to acquire for the screen.
Levi, 70, has become a publishing phenomenon with his first book. As per the official synopsis: “One morning, a stranger arrives in the town of Golden. No one knows who he is or where he came from… His name is Theo and he’s arrived there by chance – or has he? He visits the local coffeehouse, where ninety-two pencil portraits hang on the walls, portraits by a local artist of the people of Golden.
He begins purchasing them, one at a time, and putting them back in the hands of their ‘rightful owners’. With each exchange, a story is told, a friendship born, and a life altered.”
Gil Netter, Gary Goetzman and Hanks will produce, and the author will be executive producer. Jesse Ehrman and Sheila Walcott are overseeing the project for Warner Bros. The team credits literary affairs executive Ian Dalrymple for flagging the project to the studio, Deadline reported.
The novel was self-published by Levi, who left a law career to make music in Goergia. It started becoming popular with word of mouth and soon featured in Oprah Winfrey’s podcast.
The book was published wide by Simon & Schuster last October and has sold over 3.5 million copies in the US. It has been published in 43 languages and was a No. 1 bestseller in places like the Netherlands, Italy and the UK.
