A top naxal, Ekkanti Seetharam Reddy alias Naganna surrendered before Commissioner of Police, Vishnu S Warrier in Khammam on Friday.

Khammam: A top naxal Ekkanti Seetharam Reddy alias Naganna, a Divisional Committee Member (DVCM), East Division of Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) surrendered to the police. After 38 years of underground life with Maoists, he surrendered before Commissioner of Police (CP), Vishnu S Warrier here on Friday. The surrendered naxal was also known with other aliases such as Shivanna, Appanna, Iythu and Saleem.

Speaking to media persons, the Police Commissioner informed that Seetharam Reddy hails from Chinthiryala village of Aswapuram mandal of Bhadradri-Kothagudem district. He studied up to 10th class in Jakkam Gopaiah Memorial School at Burgampadu of the district. While pursuing his studies in Government Polytechnic College at Masab Tank in Hyderabad between 1974 and 1976, he actively participated in the activities of Radical Student Union (RSU) and Radical Youth League (RYL).


He met Kondapalli Seetharamaiah during meetings at Ananthapuram, Guntur and Khammam and later, joined Peoples War Group (PWG) in the year 1981 in Bhadrachalam Dalam as dalam member. In the year 1982, he was elevated as Dalam commander and worked in Shabari, Venkatapuram, Rampachodavaram dalams. He was arrested by Donelankapalem police in April 1985 and lodged in Rajahmundry Central Jail from 1985 to 1987 and the next year he was released on bail after that he went to his native village and engaged in agriculture from 1988 to 1991, CP said.

In the year 1992, due to frequent calls from Party caure and also due to family problems again he joined Ranganna Dalam of Malkangiri area worked up to 1999, in which he was elevated as Area Committee Member and worked in Pampuluru dalam as Dalam Commander. In 2002, he was shifted to the East Area Committee in Andhra Orissa Border (AOB). In 2008, he was again elevated as DVCM of Malkangiri East Division of AOB and taught political classes to the party cadre from 2008 to 2021, Warrier explained. In 2018 he left the party and stayed at houses of Maoist sympathisers in the AOB area. The reason for Naganna’s surrender was his ill health. He was unable to walk, suffering from skin allergy, several other ailments and age related factors, he noted.

DGP’S message

In a message, the DGP M Mahender Reddy appealed to the Maoist cadres to join the mainstream life and take part in the advancement of the nation through constructive participation. He wanted the naxals to benefit from the rehabilitation offered by Telangana government which includes immediate relief with suitable amount and other support measures. The State government would hand over Rs 5 lakh towards his rehabilitation and a cash reward of Rs. 10,000 towards immediate expenses.
