Traffic violations, drunk driving cases go up in Mancherial

In 2024, a total of 2,15,927 e-challans were issued to motorists for traffic violations in the district, marking a 40% increase from 1,53,230 in the previous year. Fines amounting to Rs. 5 crore were levied on the violators, compared to Rs. 3.37 crore during the same period last year.

Mancherial: In an alarming trend, violations of traffic rules and cases for drunk driving have drastically gone up in the district in 2024, according to information provided by the police.

As many as 2,15,927 e-challans were imposed against motorists for violating traffic norms in the district in 2024 when compared to 1,53,230, posting an increase by 40 percent. Fines worth Rs 5 crore were imposed against the violators. The quantum of fines was Rs 3.37 crore in corresponding period.

Similarly, 6,054 cases were booked for drunk driving in the district from January 1 to December 31, 2024 as against 5,849 cases in 2024 indicating a rise by 4 percent. Fines worth Rs 32.84 lakh were imposed against the accused persons in this year. The value of fines was Rs 51.47 lakh in the previous year.

Police said that the district saw a spurt in road accidents in 2024. It registered 412 mishaps in the year as against 326 accidents in 2023. A total of 123 persons were killed, while 434 persons sustained injuries in the road mishaps when compared to 111 deaths of humans caused by the accidents in 2023.

Meanwhile, 12 cases were booked against 23 persons for allegedly trading spurious cotton seeds worth Rs 46.04 lakh in the district in 2024 when compared to four cases registered against 13 persons in 2023. A sum of 1,611 quintals of cotton seeds worth Rs 46.04 lakh were seized in the recently concluded year as against 1,333 quintals of seeds. The value of the seeds was Rs 26.81 lakh.
