Tribal villagers worship Gajjal deity to seek rains in Adilabad

Aboriginal tribals from nearly 20 villages in Adilabad district gathered at Vadgaon in Indervelli mandal on Sunday to worship the Gajjal deity, seeking relief from a prolonged dry spell.

Adilabad: Aboriginal tribals from around 20 villages worshipped the Gajjal deity seeking rains at Vadgaon village in Indervelli mandal on Sunday.

The tribals gathered at the temple of the deity and performed certain rituals. They ceremoniously revered the deity, sacrificing chickens and goats as part of their tradition. They later cooked dishes and dined on the premises of the temple.

The tribals said that they would traditionally worship the deity whenever the region experienced a prolonged dry spell and drought like situation. They stated that their belief worked wonders. They recalled that their crops were saved by the deity from withering once they revered her. The village has come alive following the presence of the tribals.

Meanwhile, people worshipped deities such as Maisamma, Pochamma, Gandhari, etc to appease rain God in different parts of the district. They presented Bonam, a ceremonial dish cooked with rice, jaggery and milk, to the deities. They danced to drum beats, while taking out a procession carrying the bowl of the dish on their heads.
