TRS Corporator Neeraja elected first woman Mayor of KMC

Khammam: The 27th division TRS corporator, Ponukollu Neeraja, was elected as the first woman Mayor of Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC) while party’s 26th division corporator, Shaik Fathima Zohara was elected as the first woman Deputy Mayor here on Friday.

They were elected unanimously by show of hands following a whip issued by the TRS party. Additional Collector, N Madhusudhan acted as the Presiding Officer and the election was conducted in the presence of general observer, Nadeem Ahmed at the KMC council meeting hall.

The Additional Collector acting as the Special Officer of the KMC administered the oath of the newly elected corporators and the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Speaking after taking the oath of office Neeraja stated that she would strive to develop Khammam city on par with the State capital, Hyderabad and urged the cooperation of council members for the purpose.

Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy and the TRS leader N Naresh Reddy were present at the election as the party observers. MP, Nama Nageswar Rao and Municipal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi were also present at the election.

Later, the minister and the MP have felicitated the newly elected Mayor, Neeraja and her deputy, Zohara. Speaking on the occasion they appealed to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and the TRS corporators to lay focus on public issues and make efforts to address them.

It might be noted that the TRS registered a sweeping victory in the KMC election held on May 3 by bagging 43 of the total 60 municipal divisions in the second election held to the KMC. The TRS’s ally won two seats, Congress-10, BJP-1, CPI (M) and Independents won two divisions each.
