Hyderabad: Condemning the statement of union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy that the establishment of a steel plant at Bayyaram was not feasible though it was assured in the AP Reorganisation Act, TRS leaders said on Tuesday that they will stage a day-long demonstration at Khammam on Wednesday. They demanded Kishan Reddy to explain whether he made the statement in his personal capacity or on behalf of the union government.
Speaking to mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan here on Tuesday, TRS Lok Sabha floor leader Nama Nageshwara Rao said as per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Centre must establish the steep plant at Bayyaram and fulfill its promise. He stated that Kishan Reddy’s statement has hurt the tribals of Bayyaram and watered down their hopes for fresh job opportunities. He reminded that the then Central government planned to allow a private company to establish the steel plant and issued two government orders in 2009 as well as 2010, but rolled back following public outrage.
“Experts from the Central agencies have confirmed that the iron ore of 40-60 per cent quality was available at Bayyaram. But the Centre is not ready to establish the steel plant. Injustice is being meted to Telangana on all fronts,” the MP said. He pointed out that the Centre which was bearing the entire expenditure for developing Regional Ring Roads in other States, was insisting that the Telangana government bear 50 per cent expenditure. He stated that despite the recommendations from NITI Aayog, the Centre did not only fail to release Rs 24,000 of grants to Telangana, but also not releasing funds for Mission Bhagiratha under Har Ghar Jal programme on par with other States.
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar demanded to know what Kishan Reddy had done for development of the State. He stated that the State government was ready to extend complete cooperation, if the Centre was willing to establish the steel plant. “Despite being a union Minister, Kishan Reddy did not get any new project sanctioned to the State. We urge him to take the initiative and get the steel plant sanctioned. We will extend him a grand welcome,” he added.
Mahabubabad MP Kavitha Maloth and former MLC M Sreenivas Reddy were present.
