Hyderabad: IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao said on Monday that the State government would honour veteran journalist, social activist and writer late Suravaram Pratapa Reddy by naming a State University after him on the lines of Prof Jayashankar, Konda Laxman Bapuji and others. Though the family of Pratapa Reddy had never asked for any recognition, it was the responsibility of the State government to honour the Telangana veteran, he said.
Participating in the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Pratapa Reddy at Deshoddharaka Bhavan here, Rama Rao said Pratapa Reddy was a social reformer, editor, journalist, poet, writer and literary figure. He pointed out that if Telangana State was not formed, many such legendary persons from the region would not have received their due place in the history, and future generations would not have not have known about their accomplishments.
“Today, we ensured that Telangana’s great personalities are remembered in our daily lives. The State Health University is named after poet Kaloji Narayana Rao, the Veterinary University is named after former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, the Horticulture University is named after freedom fighter Konda Laxman Bapuji and Agriculture University is named after professor Jayashankar. We will honour Pratapa Reddy as well by naming a State University after him. We will take up the issue with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao who has always emphasised the need for Telangana State to revive its culture and importance of honouring its icons,” he added.
Stating that there were many more forgotten poets, writers and iconic personalities from Telangana State whose legacy needed to be reintroduced, Rama Rao said the State government was celebrating the centenary celebrations of Narasimha Rao. He expressed happiness that the 125th birth anniversary of Pratapa Reddy was also being celebrated during the same year marking his birthday on May 28. He recalled that the veteran journalist was synonymous with Golconda newspaper published during the Nizam era in a true reflection of Telangana’s true identity.
“But apart from running the newspaper despite restrictions from the then Nizam rule, I learned about the multi-faceted personality of Pratapa Reddy who was progressive and is remembered for his revolutionary ideas which left lasting impression on society. His life was strewn with conflicts and he fought against all odds for a better society due to which we remember him and are celebrating his birth anniversary even after 125 years,” he said.
Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy and Tourism Minister V Srinivas Goud, CPI former general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, senior journalists, writers and family members of Pratapa Reddy also attended the event. The participants paid tributes to Suravaram Pratapa Reddy.
