Hyderabad: The Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC) has appealed to all the practicing doctors in the State to strictly write prescriptions of drugs only in their generic forms and avoid mentioning any specific brand names.

In a notice, TSMC Registrar, Dr Ch Hanmantha Rao said the council has recently received directions from the Lokayukta to take up this issue seriously and also gave a verdict that any doctor who contravenes or does not mention generic names of the drugs, will amount to acting against the directions of the Medical Council of India (MCI), which will invite disciplinary action.

Recently the MCI had issued a circular stating that all the practicing doctors should write generic names of the drugs in their prescriptions and not brand names. Following the MCI advisory, the Lokayukta had taken the issue suo motto and asked the Registrar, TSMSC whether it has taken any action in this regard, Dr Rao said.

Replying to Lokayukta, the TSMC Registrar explained that the issue was brought to the notice of all doctors associations, private hospitals and Heads of Government Medical Departments, Principals of Medical Colleges, Superintendents of all the teaching hospitals and District Medical and Health Officers, and Superintendents of District Head Quarters Hospitals in Telangana, urging them to inform about the new policy to individual doctors who are in their organisation.

“Recently, this issue was taken-up as a PIL in the High Court. The Lokayukta also has given strict instructions to implement the MCI advisory on mentioning only generic names. Hence, it is a sincere appeal to all the doctors to strictly follow and write prescriptions on generic names only. If anybody complaints to the TSMC, it will have no other option except for calling explanation and start disciplinary proceedings against whom the complaint is lodged,” he said.
