TS per capita power consumption higher than national average: Jagadish Reddy

Hyderabad: Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy said Telangana’s per capita power consumption in 2020-21 was 2,012 units compared to the national average of 1,161 units. “This is 73 per cent higher than the national per capita. This is also a testimony of the rapid progress achieved in the power sector in the State,” he said during question hour in the Assembly on Monday.

The State grid met a peak demand of 13,688 MW on March 26, 2021 against the united Andhra Pradesh peak demand of 13,162 MW on March 23, 2014. It had also achieved the record consumption of 283.38 million units on April 3, 2021, the Minister said. Telangana was the only State, which was supplying 24 hours free power to 26.24 lakh agriculture consumers. The State Government provided a subsidy of Rs.25, 467 crores from 2014-15 to 2020-21 for providing free power to agriculture sector, he said while replying to TRS legislator Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy. The State Government was focusing on clean energy production. The solar power generation was 74 MW in 2014 and the State now has one of the highest solar installed capacity of 4,307 MW in the country, he said.

After the State formation, about Rs.34,970 crores were spent on strengthening of transmission and distribution network. Telangana records just 2.47 per cent transmission losses of and it was the lowest in the country, besides maintaining the highest transmission availability of 99.98 per cent, the Minister said.
