Hyderabad: Telangana Government is planning to set up a Centre of Excellence of Advanced Manufacturing to give a boost to manufacturing in select areas. The State already has pharma and aerospace manufacturing clusters, whose quality is on par with international manufacturers. The effort now is to bring sectors which have good potential but are lagging, said IT and Industries Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan.

Speaking at the Man’EXE, an industry event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in partnership with Government of Telangana, he said the proposed CoE will bring in modernity to manufacturing, give new generation tools to the manufacturers and also bring in automation. The centre will be set up in consultations with industry bodies, he said.

The State has many manufacturing clusters including some in the public sector space. Earlier, PSUs and their ancillary units have led the manufacturing revolution in Hyderabad. Now, the State capital has emerged as a smart manufacturing hub due to the strong presence of pharma, aerospace sectors and catering to many international clients.

“Our pharma manufacturing is considered to be one the best in the country. Even though Covid had disrupted the supply chains of many sectors, it has opened new opportunities in terms of use of digital technologies, automation, and enhancement of quality across sectors which are coming to pre-covid level. State Government is committed to strengthen the manufacturing sector in the State as it would provide employment opportunities to many people,” he said.

Ranjan said there is untapped manufacturing potential in many sectors but they will need support in terms of automation, digital and ancillaries. The Government will look up for recommendations from industry bodies like CII on unlocking the potential for manufacturing across segments, he said speaking on the theme ‘SMART Manufacturing: Resurgence of Manufacturing sector’, which stressed on adaptive engineering for competitiveness, new age skilling, remote, and virtual manufacturing.

Vijay Kalra, Head Mahindra Institute of Quality, mentioned that Hyderabad is the IT-pharma and engineering capital of the world. Customers have global exposure and the companies are striving to deliver best value in terms of quantity, quality and time.

D Raju, Managing Director and CEO, Kirby Building Systems and Structures, said that now the focus is on Make in India, Make for the World. The companies should inculcate a habit of manufacturing for the world. This can help the Indian industries find their place in the global valuechains. Industries should increase investments in research and innovations.

Krishna Bodanapu, Chairman, CII Telangana and MD, CYIENT, that automation and smart manufacturing have potential to propel manufacturing in Telangana and help Indian companies offer quality products at competitive prices.
