Hyderabad: The State government on Wednesday constituted a special committee with officials from Forest, Veterinary and Agriculture departments to come up with effective measures to control the monkey menace in the State.
An article on how monkey menace was forcing farmers to stick to paddy was published in these columns on November 29. The issue was also discussed during the Cabinet meeting on Monday.
Following directions from Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to curb monkey and wild boar menace and save farmers from crop damages, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar held a high-level meeting at BRKR Bhavan on Wednesday on measures to be taken to control the problem. He discussed the issue with officials from Forest, Agriculture, Veterinary and other departments concerned and experts in the field to control monkey and wild boar menace.
The committee will study measures and best practices implemented in other States in tackling monkey menace. It will also examine the need for establishing more sterilization centres to control and stabilize monkey population.
The committee will submit its report to the government within a week and the same will be presented to the Chief Minister that would later be discussed in the Cabinet. A decision was also taken to create awareness among the public and farmers on handling animals and protecting their crops by using several conventional methods.
Special Chief Secretary, Forest, Shanti Kumari, Secretary, PR & RD Secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar, Secretary Agriculture M Raghunandan Rao, Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor V Praveen Rao, Veterinary University Vice-Chancellor V Ravinder Reddy and other officials participated in the meeting.
