Hyderabad: Three Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) sportswomen heaved a sigh of relief after the Society responded in the eleventh hour to foot airfare of its students to take part in the 4th Asian Universities Women Softball Asia Cup Taichung 2024, Taiwan. The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 15.

The move comes after a story – ‘Three TG sports women struggle for aid’ – published in these columns on October 11 highlighted how sportswomen were struggling for a financial assistance of Rs.1.5 lakh each to cover their air travel expenses.

Three Telangana Social Welfare Degree Colleges for Women students – Guguloth Mamatha, Lakavath Rani and Ajmera Indu – are among the 16-member team from India selected for the tournament. Students, along with their parents who are from economically weaker sections, ran pillar to post to secure assistance. In fact, a letter from Advisor to Government (Agriculture) Pocharam Srinivas Reddy requesting the society to arrange the amount did not yield a positive response.

According to sources, the Society approved the assistance only after the story highlighting students’ pleas published in these columns.” The bill for Rs.1.5 lakh for each student has been cleared by the Society on Sunday. Now, we are on the way from Chennai from Taiwan,” said one of the students.

In a statement released to media, the Society said three students, along with the all India team headed by coach Ranjith, left for Taiwan on Sunday.

“As always our society will make all arrangements to provide economic support to students to cover all expenses related to their travel and participation. The CM and Secretary SCDD wished team India a great success,” the Society said.
