Hyderabad: Believing thoroughly in the saying – “It is never too late to start anything”- a group of elderly women have come together to turn their mini-parties into something meaningful. And that’s how the idea of turning clutter into charity was born.

A group of Armed Forces’ wives who have regular creative gatherings, one day had a member, Sudha Gorthi discussing the many unused things at home and how they could be of use to others if sold at affordable prices.

Gulshan G Bamboat, one of the ladies behind the workings of the yearly sale, says, “We all quickly grabbed the idea and now we are going to have our sixth Charity Jumble Sale this year.”

Having collected unused articles delivered by city dwellers to their houses in the localities of Sainikpuri and Vayupuri, the group of women from aged 50-80 years, work together to segregate the non-functional from the functional ones.

“We donate the electronic waste to Croma and also give away or throw torn clothes or articles. The ones which are functional are given a cost depending on various parameters and are sold either through our Facebook pages or Whatsapp groups,” Gulshan notes.

The items are also sold at dirt cheap prices on a designated day at Brigadier MK Rao Memorial Hall in Sainikpuri. Apart from bags, gadgets, clothes, footwear, toys and books, the sale sometimes also includes furniture like sofa, TV table, side-table and so on.

“In the first year in 2016 we had collected Rs 73,000 from the one-day sale and the last one, in the year 2020, our collections exceeded Rs 5 lakh,” Gulshan proudly shares.
The money collected is then donated to several orphanages, old-age homes, schools for children with special needs and NGOs in the city.

This year, the Charity Jumble Sale is set to happen around March and the ladies have already started collecting clutter from people delivering at their households. However, the last date for donating some unused items from your homes is 15 February.

So having some things which are no longer used by you? Contact Gulshan Bamboat to donate them @9032057277.
