Hyderabad: With the controversy surrounding the proposed demolition of the Madhu Park Ridge apartment complex for installing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi escalating, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi has appealed to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to issue a statement and clear the misconception.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tushar Gandhi said: “I earnestly appeal to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to issue a statement to clear up the misconception that displacement of citizens in Hyderabad is to construct a statue of Bapu. The notion that people are losing their homes because of the Gandhi statue is contributing to the defaming-Gandhi campaign of the sangh.”
The appeal came after the Chief Minister spoke about the issue while addressing the International Women’s Day celebrations here. Without naming the apartment complex, he said the structure was located within the 50-metre buffer zone of the River Esa and that, as per rules, any structures constructed in the buffer zone had to be cleared.
Even if the apartment was not demolished now, it would eventually turn into a zero-value structure. Buying or selling flats in the apartment would not be possible as it was located within the 50-metre buffer zone, he had said.
Ever since the Congress government announced plans to develop the Gandhi Sarovar project, Tushar Gandhi has been opposing the proposal.
“Displacing residents to create space for a Gandhi statue is the most unGandhian action. My appeal to the CM of Telangana is to please not do it,” Tushar Gandhi had posted on X last month.
“Bapu would have said ‘Not in my name. Stop it,’” he had said.
