Hyderabad:The twin reservoirs, Osmansagar and Himayathsagar, considered the lifeline of Hyderabad’s water supply, are experiencing a dip in water levels due to insufficient rainfall this season.

Though the monsoon hit Telangana in June, what followed was poor rainfall, resulting in a deficit in the city. This is reflected in the water levels during June and July at these two reservoirs.

For instance, on June 16, the water level at Osmansagar was 1783 feet against a full tank level (FTL) of 1790 feet. However, the water level dropped to 1782 feet in a month, i.e., as recorded on July 16—a drop of one foot.

At Himayathsagar, the recorded water level on June 16 was 1758 feet, against an FTL of 1763 feet. A month later, it was found to have dropped by a foot, with July 16 showing the water level as 1757 feet. A similar situation was observed at the Singur drinking water source, where a one-foot drop was recorded in the water levels compared to last month.

This situation is a matter of concern for officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), as these reservoirs play a key role in quenching the thirst of some parts of the city and Old City.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and efforts are being made to ensure the water supply remains uninterrupted and that residents of Hyderabad do not face any shortages. For the past one and a half months, there has been no rain in the upstream areas of these twin reservoirs and, as a result, not much water has flowed into them, officials of HMWSSB said.

Water levels in feet at Osmansagar and Himayathsagar:

Source FTL June 16 July 16
Osmansagar 1790 1783  1782
Himayathsagar 1763 1758 1757
Singur 1717 1710 1709
