Siddipet: The farming fraternity in Ragothampally is shaken by two farmer suicides reported in the village within 48 hours. While one of the farmers died on Monday, another died by suicide in the early hours of Wednesday.

The village, which mostly depends on farming, has a population of just 1,500. It has never witnessed two suicides in such a short period in its history. The cause of both the suicides was financial problems after they suffered continuous losses in farming over the last couple of years.

On Wednesday, the village woke up to the news of the death of farmer Reddy Mohan Reddy (45), who cultivated paddy on his two acres. Mohan Reddy was under financial stress, with his debts amounting to around Rs.4.5 lakh. Meanwhile, his wife had also left him and gone to her parents’ home due to his financial issues. Unable to resolve the issues in his life, Reddy hanged himself in his paddy field. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Last Monday, Nalla Devi Reddy (58) also died by hanging, reportedly due to financial problems. Devi Reddy, who owned four acres of land, had accumulated debts amounting to Rs.10 lakh over the years. He sold one acre two years ago after performing his daughter’s and son’s marriages, but still had to repay another Rs.10 lakh borrowed from various sources. Though he wanted to sell one more acre to come out of financial distress, he could not due to land disputes with his brothers.
