Hyderabad: Two persons who were involved in illegal transport and sale of gutkha were arrested by the Commissioner’s Task Force (North) on Thursday. The police seized gutkha worth Rs. 63.96 lakh from them. Seven others involved in the case are absconding.
Acting on a tip off, the team nabbed Mirza Fazil Hussain Baig (36) of Yakutpura, and Dastagir Abbas Miya (50), a native of Maharashtra.
City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said the nine member gang was smuggling gutkha into the city from Bidar in the neighbouring Karnataka.
“After transporting the contraband into the city, they were storing it in a godown. After identifying the local retailers and gutkha addicts, the same was sold to them at a higher price,” he said.
On information the Commissioner’s Task Force (North) caught Baig, the transporter and Abbas Miya, who was incharge of the godown where the contraband was stored.
Efforts are on to nab the absconding suspects.
