Hyderabad: A brief halt by the roadside to have a quick meal turned out to be fatal for two men after a speeding container truck rammed into their parked luxury car on the Outer Ring Road near Shamirpet on Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred near Exit-7 under Shamirpet police station limits. An Audi car travelling from Medchal towards Shamirpet had pulled over to the side of the road so that its occupants could stop for a quick meal. Some of them reportedly stepped out of the vehicle and stood behind it while eating.
Tragedy struck when a container truck approaching from behind at high speed allegedly went out of control and crashed into the stationary car. The impact was so severe that two men standing behind the vehicle were thrown off and suffered grievous injuries.
The victims died on the spot due to heavy bleeding and multiple injuries. Police later identified them as Mohd Yusuf Khan (51), a resident of Moula Ali, and Mohd Hussain (53) from Kapra Saket.
Local motorists alerted the authorities, following which Shamirpet police rushed to the scene. The bodies were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital for autopsy.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the container driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. It is learnt that the police took the container truck driver into custody and began questioning him.
Officials suspect that over speeding and drunken driving led to the crash. Police teams also examined the CCTV footage from surveillance cameras installed near the accident site and on nearby stretches of the ORR, to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Shamirpet police registered a case and further investigation is on.
