Hyderabad: Surgical oncologists at Hyderabad-based American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Citizens Specialty Hospital have successfully conducted a surgery on a two-year-old girl, who was suffering from a life-threatening abnormal growth known as neoplastic swelling, on the right side of her neck.
On June 10, the relatives of the child had approached IT Minister KT Rama Rao on Twitter and sought his help to take up the surgery. Moved by the child’s condition, the Minister had promised to get personally involved and ensure the child gets the best medical care.
The American Oncology Institute along with senior surgical oncologist Dr Jagdishwar Goud volunteered to take up the surgical procedure. A team of robotic onco-surgeons led by Dr. Goud then performed the surgery that included identification, dissection, and preservation of the carotid artery, as well as of the nerve which produces voice.
“The child had been suffering from the condition for over 18 months. The swelling has been exerting pressure on food and breathing pipe, thereby manifesting as a life-threatening condition,” Dr Goud said.
Following a period of post-op observation, the child has been discharged. The hospital management also decided to waive all treatment charges. Rao tweeted appreciating the gesture of the doctors for taking up the complex procedure.
