Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Secunderabad have successfully conducted a live liver transplant surgery on a two-year-old baby girl from Philippines. The father of the toddler donated a portion of his liver for taking up the transplant surgery.

The child was suffering from a congenital liver disease known as Biliary Atresia, a condition in which the bile ducts do not develop normally at birth and leads to jaundice. Back in Philippines, the girl underwent a procedure for treatment of Biliary Atresia. However, she developed jaundice and was later diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and was referred for liver transplantation.

With the child’s mother not eligible to donate liver due to a previous medical condition, her father came forward to donate a part of his liver. “He however had fatty liver along with high cholesterol. We put him on a diet, regular exercise and medications. Eventually, the father lost about eight kilograms and there was an improvement in his cholesterol levels, which allowed the transplantation,” doctors said.

Following the transplant surgery, the baby girl and her father are recovering well. While the child is still under observation, the father has been discharged. The liver functions of the girl have continued to improve and she has started consuming normal food and play actively. The transplant was led by by Chief of Liver Transplant, Dr Ravichand Siddachari, Hepatobiliary – Pancreatic (HPB), G.I and Transplant Surgeon, Dr Srinivas Prabhu Chava, Anaesthesiologists Dr Raghavendra, Dr Praveen and others.
