Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao took a swipe at the Congress government for organising sports events for MLAs in the middle of an ongoing Assembly session. He said the decision to hold sports competitions on March 28 and 29 exposed a lack of seriousness of the ruling Congress towards legislative business.

Speaking informally in the Assembly lobbies on Thursday evening, Rama Rao ridiculed the government’s diversion tactic to evade questions from the opposition. “They cannot run the House, but want to run sports meets,” he said, taking aim at the Congress government and questioning its priorities during crucial budget discussions.

The BRS working president said the government was rushing through budget discussions and avoiding detailed debates on key sectors like irrigation. “What message does the Congress want to convey to the public?” he asked, adding that lawmakers are expected to debate pressing issues, not participate in sports events while the House was in session.

He accused the government of using the sports events as an excuse to avoid answering uncomfortable questions from the Opposition and cut short meaningful discussion in the House. He said though he took up the issue with Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, there was no response.
