Hyderabad: Osmania University decided to issue chip or Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) based unique identity cards to its campus students from this academic year. The new cards can be utilised at all facilities on the campus colleges.
In the absence of such a unique identity card, the university administration used to generate different numbers for facilitating students to use various facilities like hostels, library and mess among others. Apart from enabling students in using various facilities on the campus, the new system will aid the administration in identifying who is a bonafide student besides helping in evicting non-boarders from campus hostels.
The new cards will also help in barring outsider entry into the campus. It will be used by the administration in admission, examination works, library and mess facilities etc. The idea of a unique identity card is to streamline the student information system and to provide more opportunities and facilities to genuine students of campus colleges.
To start with, the new system will be implemented for the second and third engineering students of campus colleges and later on, will be extended to all students on campus colleges.
āA unique ID card system which is chip or RFID based is being introduced for new students. Initially, this will be implemented for second and third-year engineering students in a week. Initial issues, if any, will be rectified and later on the cards will be issued to other students of the university. Also, there are plans to introduce a barcoding system which will have all details of the students,ā OU Vice-Chancellor Prof D Ravinder said.
Apart from the card, the varsity administration is in the process of developing a faculty management system that will have all details pertaining to teachers including regular, part-time and contract teaching staff. Also in the pipeline are coloured vehicle entry stickers for students and staff of the university. This means vehicles of students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and also of visitors, will have different colour stickers, making it easy for the security to identify any vehicle on the campus.
