University of Hyderabad researchers secure patent for Hyderacene rocket propellant material
Researchers at the University of Hyderabad have received an Indian patent for Hyderacene, an indigenous dual-action material for rocket propellants. Combining binder and catalyst functions in one molecule, it improves combustion efficiency, stability and performance for aerospace and defence applications.

Hyderabad: Researchers at the University of Hyderabad have secured an Indian patent for their groundbreaking innovation, Hyderacene, a dual-action material designed specifically for rocket propellants and high-performance defence applications.
In solid rocket propellants, two critical components are required: the Binder, a glue-like polymer that holds all active fuel components together while providing structural integrity, and catalyst, a specialised chemical additive that speeds up and controls the burning rate of the propellant.
The Hyderacene developed by three inventors —Mutyalanaidu Ganivada, Sourav Jana, and Tushar Jana—acts as both a polymer binder and a catalyst.
The new material, according to researchers, replaces Butacene that has long been a commercial standard in defence and space applications. It offers a homegrown, highly effective alternative to standard commercial options.
By combining binding and catalytic properties into a single molecule (Ferrocene Polyethylene Glycidyl Grafted Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene), the Hyderacene eliminates component separation issues over time and improves performance stability, the researchers said.
“It ensures smoother, faster, and more efficient combustion in aerospace and missile engines,” they added.
