Unlicensed seeds worth Rs 30.24 lakh seized in Kothagudem

Kothagudem: In a joint raid conducted by agriculture and police officials, unlicensed chilli seeds worth about Rs 30.24 lakh were seized at Sujatha Nagar mandal headquarters in the district on Tuesday.
The raid was conducted in Kothagudem by mandal agriculture officer G Narmada and VM Banjar (Enkoor Circle) Sub-Inspector of Police (SI) T Nagaraju following a complaint lodged by a farmer at Enkoor police station in Khammam district. The farmer who bought the seeds at Sujatha Nagar in Kothagudem came to know later that the seeds he bought were unlicensed and lodged a complaint with the Enkoor police who in turn alerted agriculture officials in Sujatha Nagar to look into the matter.
Star Bindhu variety chilli seeds manufactured by Dwaraka Seeds Private Limited were stocked at Sai Lakshmi Agencies to sell to farmers without any valid permission. As many as 2,016 seeds packets each worth Rs 1,500 were seized, agriculture officer Narmada told media persons.
No arrests have been made in connection with the case, police said. It might be recalled that a trader, Kushinni Rosaiah of Enkoor was arrested recently for selling chilli seeds without bills and based on the information given by him Khammam police arrested seven persons on Monday.
It might be noted that the State government has directed the police, agriculture and revenue officials to crack the whip against traders selling fake seeds to protect the interests of the farmers.
Task Force teams with police and agriculture officials were formed to check the sale of fake seeds, nonetheless the traders continue to dupe the farmers by selling them spurious and unauthorised seeds.
