Unscheduled power cuts hit Hyderabad areas despite monsoon

Residents across several Hyderabad areas have reported unscheduled power cuts lasting up to two hours in September. While TGSPDCL attributed interruptions to tree pruning along Ganesh immersion procession routes, consumers said outages were affecting areas beyond the designated procession routes.

Hyderabad: This year, power cuts are no longer limited to the summer season, as residents in several areas across three municipal corporations are facing unscheduled outages even in the month of September.

The power cuts in areas, including Financial District, Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, Kondapur, Manikonda, Old City and Attapur, are lasting between one and two hours, with several residents lamenting about no prior information about the cuts. This has been affecting the IT professionals who are working from home and routine activities of the residents who are clueless about power disruptions.

Some residents of Hyderabad’s Central zone, including areas such as Kalyan Nagar, SR Nagar, Madhura Nagar, Yousufguda, Mothi Nagar and Erragadda, lamented that power interruptions have become a regular affair even in September, making the situation difficult for them to plan essential tasks.

Similar is the predicament of people living in the Old City. “It is monsoon season but feels like summer. Adding to this discomfort, there are regular power cuts. Generally, power goes off during the rains. But now even without rain, there are regular power disruptions,” said Adil Khan, a resident of Falaknuma.

Several citizens also took to social media to express their anguish over the unscheduled power cuts. The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSDPCL) and State government X handles are being flooded with power cut complaints.

One X user @TheRealSoms on Saturday posted, “Today it’s not even raining, and we are getting more than an hour-long power cut on a weekend, but stuck with a power cut. Sri Ram Nagar Colony, Kondapur: complaint registered 40 mins back, yet no action”.

Another user @minhazmmz786 posted around 2 pm, “Power cut in Laxman Nagar, Shaikpet, Hyderabad since 10:30 AM. Power came back twice for a few seconds and went off again. @tgspdcl please look into this and restore power ASAP. No update on the outage”.

However, the TGSPDCL officials attributed power interruptions to the tree pruning being carried out in colonies for Ganesh idols immersion procession. They claimed there is disruption in power supply only for a short duration as workers are pruning the tree branches.

Interestingly, the consumers argued that such an exercise is confined to a few colonies, especially those connecting Ganesh idol procession routes. But the issue of power outages is prevailing across several areas in the city.
