Lakhimpur Kheri: A probe has been ordered into the death of a tigress which was hit by a train in the Dudhwa buffer zone, officials said on Thursday.

The tigress, which was estimated to be five to six years old, was found dead near the Bankeyganj-Mailani railway track in Mailani range of the Dudhwa buffer zone.

After the postmortem, Dudhwa buffer zone officials instituted an investigation into its death.

Dudhwa buffer zone Deputy Director Kirti Chaudhary told PTI that “investigation is in progress to identify the train by which the accident was caused and also to ascertain if the train was following the speed limit as prescribed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for trains passing through reserved forest areas with wild animal presence.”

After the death of the tigress, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) field director H Rajamohan and Chaudhary rushed to the spot and inspected the spot.

As per NTCA guidelines, a postmortem examination by a panel of veterinary doctors was carried out.

Daya Shankar, a member of the postmortem panel, said that severe head injuries and internal bleeding led to the death of the tigress.
