Hyderabad: A woman software engineer from the city was duped of Rs 21.70 lakh by cyber fraudsters on the pretext of marriage.

The woman, a resident of Secunderabad, worked with a software company in the city and had registered with a matrimonial website recently. A month ago, one person who introduced himself as B Vamshi Krishna, claiming to work with a company in the United States as a software engineer, contacted her and after both talked, they agreed to get married and settle in the US.

“On the pretext of arranging a visa for her, the fraudster told her he needed to show bank statements to obtain the visa. He asked her to transfer Rs 21.70 lakh to a bank account and provided the details, saying he would give her back the money once the ‘statements’ were shown. Believing him, she transferred the amount and later found his phone switched off,” Hyderabad cybercrime officials said.

Based on a complaint from the victim, the police booked a case and were investigating.
