HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Wednesday felicitated three citizens who risked their lives to rescue a six-year-old girl who was pushed into Hussain Sagar by her mother.
Auto driver Fakhruddin, a private employee K Balakrishna and businessman Mohammed Afsar were going on the Tank Bund road when they rushed to the spot.
Balakrishna, a resident of Moti Nagar in Borabanda, heard the child’s cries and alerted passers-by. Fakhruddin, who was driving along the Upper Tank Bund, stopped his auto after noticing the commotion and immediately jumped into the lake. With Afsar’s assistance, he pulled the girl out of the water and brought her onto the road.
According to the police, the woman from Bowenpally has two daughters, aged eight and six. The younger child had reportedly been suffering from an illness for the past two months, and the mother was unable to bear the medical expenses.
She brought both daughters to the Upper Tank Bund and sent the elder girl away to buy ice cream and then allegedly pushed the younger child into Hussain Sagar and fled. The girl managed to hold on to a bamboo stick in the water and screamed for help and was rescued with the timely intervention of Afsar, Balakrishna, and Fakhruddin.
Sajjanar praised the trio for displaying courage and presence of mind, saying their actions set an example for society at a time when people often record emergencies on their mobile phones instead of helping those in distress.
